Tuberculosis (TB) Test
Depending on where you have lived recently, you may be required to provide a valid TB test certificate as part of your visa application.
Do you need a TB test?
You must get a TB test if all of the following are true:
- You are coming to the UK for 6 months or more
- You have lived in a country on the official list for 6 months or more
- You were living in that country (or another listed country) within the last 6 months
If you are applying as a fiancé, fiancée, or proposed civil partner, you may still need a TB test even if you are coming to the UK for less than 6 months.
How the test works
- Procedure: You will be given a chest X-ray. If the X-ray result is not clear, you may also be asked to provide a sputum sample.
- The certificate: If the result shows you do not have TB, you will be given a certificate.
- Validity: This certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your X-ray. You must include it with your visa application.
Special circumstances
- Children: All children must see a clinician, but those under 11 will not normally have an X-ray. If the clinician confirms there is no TB, you will receive the required certificate.
- Pregnant women: You can choose:
- An X-ray with an extra shield to protect you and your baby (in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters)
- A sputum test (may involve an extra fee and a wait of up to 8 weeks)
- To wait until after delivery to have the test
Use an approved clinic
You must use a clinic that is officially approved by the Home Office. Tests taken at non-approved clinics will not be accepted, and your application will likely be rejected.
Check the official list of approved clinics in your country before booking your appointment. Book well in advance of your intended visa submission date.
